Who are your best people?

“It is a rare experience for me to read a book where I have an overwhelming urge to shout ‘yes!’ to almost every page. But that is what this book does to me.” - Dr Peter Honey
In a Nutshell
This book will open managers’ eyes to the reality of talent management, showing them the most effective ways to recruit, grow, support and retain the best people for their business.
In More Depth
It is a favourite cliché of company mission statements to proclaim that: ‘Our people are our most important asset’, but many companies fail to treat that asset as valuable. Quite the opposite; all too often they actually ignore their in-house talent, believing that the only way to get the top people is to hire in consultants
And yet research shows that companies who properly manage their talent achieve higher net margins, higher ROA and ROE and gain a greater competitive advantage. Talent management is no passing fad. It could be the differentiator that steers companies through the tough times ahead.
Who Are Your Best People? starts by destroying the widely-accepted myth of a talent shortage. As the authors say: “…there is no shortage of talented people. There is a shortage of people who know how to identify, develop, recruit and retain talent”.
The book goes onto show managers how to unearth the hidden talent that already exists in their organisation and then nurture, support and develop that talent, so that they can reap the benefits, rather than lose good people.
It also looks at succession planning, so that when talent does move on (hopefully within the organisation) the gap is quickly filled. And it gives managers the best advice on how to attract and recruit the best people into the organisation.
Perhaps most importantly it discusses the things companies and managers do which at best wantonly wastes talent and at worst actually destroy it, driving people away and stifling ambition and enthusiasm. This toxic management can end up costing companies a huge amount in lost revenue and recruitment (one study estimated it could be as high as £20 billion a year)
Each chapter ends with a mini article by top talent manager Bill Kuhn, which looks at the practical application of the ideas in the book and how talent can be managed most effectively.
