The opening scenes of the BBC’s acclaimed new adaptation of Little Dorrit saw young Amy scurrying through the streets of London to her appointment with destiny. The streets depicted are what we would now call Dickensian, cramped, lively and claustrophobic. They belong to a London all but vanished.
