Body Language
18 Nov 08

It is human nature to make snap decisions about people. Within minutes of meeting someone you will have made a number of presumptions about them based not on what they say, but a whole plethora of non-verbal cues, many of which you will be reading subconsciously.
In other words, the words people use will only account for a tiny percentage of the impression they make. You will be picking up on their posture, their tone of voice, what they are wearing, how they shook your hand and so on. The most famous research into body language cited that 90% of communication is transmitted non-verbally.

In fact everyday we are reading thousands of signals sent, often unwittingly, by other people and drawing conclusions from them that may well be wide of the mark. Perhaps more importantly, they will be doing the same to us.

This means that you could be quite unintentionally sending off the wrong signals, putting peoples backs up, and not getting what your want out of life, or work.
The reverse is also true. If you watch successful people you’ll notice that they have the knack for reading body language. They understand the messages they are getting and they give off the right signals to others.

Actors and Magicians are past masters at conveying the right body language to get us to believe in them. Derren Brown has taken this skill to the highest degree.
Another magician, one of the youngest admitted to the magic circle, is the author of this book. He has spent a lifetime studying body language, both academically and in his working life (as a work psychologist).

In his book James Borg will help us master the art of body language and show us how to use our own body language to give off the impression we mean to make. So whether you want to make a great first impression on a date or in the office, get a promotion, make a winning presentation or develop closer relationships with your nearest and dearest, this book delivers the secrets of body language to help you get your communications right every time.
